The Master Decorator

Room "Before"

I am not a decorator. The last time I decorated a room in a house was before children, and it was sunflowers, cows, and winnie the pooh. Does that give you a good idea of my ability, or lack thereof?

I am a keep it plain, simple, and clean looking kind of gal. In other words...BORING! ;)

So when it came time to work on the girls' room, adding bunk beds and such, I knew it would mean we would need more bed comforters, which would mean a new "look" for the room. Oh boy. Initially the girls wanted white beds and polka dots quilts. Okay. Relatively easy.

Then I read in the book of Exodus about the building of the tabernacle for the Israelites in the desert. I have read about this before, but this time God made it fresh how precise, meticulous, and creative He intended this tabernacle to be! It really is amazing. The cherubim, the vibrant colors of the curtains, the bronze, gold, silver, the precious gems in the priests' garments...impressive to say the least! I began to think, "If God can decorate a tabernacle so beautifully, He can certainly handle decorating the girls' room to His liking." I shared with the girls my thoughts and we began to pray that God would show us how HE wanted the room decorated.

I will let the pictures speak for themselves. But you can tell, white beds and polka dots was not HIS PLAN! ;)

Here is Candace's bed, all made up and ready for her! We found the comforters at WALMART!

These plaques were in Target's dollar section! It was one of those moments where we knew without a shadow of a doubt this was a God thing! Katie Lyn had the idea of the rod and ribbons.

The idea for the frames and ribbons came from Keri, mom to Eden, and precious traveling buddy last year! Thanks Keri! God used you to help us decorate!

Okay.. WOW! Lanie, it looks GREAT!!!!! i love the colors & the little theme you've got going on! You are right about the tabernacle.. that was one of my first "in depth" bible studies I did. It IS Amazing!

Kenna was looking at the pictures and she saw the girls and asked.. Momma where is her at? (she was pointing at Candances bed) I smiled & explained that it wouldn't be long and she would be there!!! So,.. just for McKenna, when Candance gets home.. take a pic for her with C in her cute new bed! lol! ;)

LOVE the room, Laine! Those comforters are the exact same as the one on Mabry's bed. How cool is that?! Only God had better taste in wall color than Mabry....she painted her walls Home-Depot Orange!
I know the girls LOVE their beautiful room...can't wait for Candace to see it! ;)

Nice job! I can tell by the girls' faces that they are very happy with the new look. Now I have few questions:

Since I have three girls in one room, our problem is always where to put things. Do you have a huge closet, or where do you keep all the clothes, shoes, etc.? Also, where are the toys? Are they on the other side of the room that is not shown in the picture, or do you have a separate playroom? My girls have a fairly large room, but it is really hard to keep things organized for three kids.

Also, how do you deal with privacy issues? Sometimes I feel bad that the girls only have a few small drawers as their own personal "treasure boxes." They seem fine with it, and I wonder if this is more my problem than theirs, as I NEED a little space from people. ? Do your older girls ever get frustrated with everyone all together? (I keep waiting for this to become an issue at my home, but so far so good :)

Last of all, how do you make up top bunk beds to look good? Nathan & Sam once had bunk beds, and the top bunk was ALWAYS a mess. When I tucked the covers in, they looked waded-up somehow.

Thanks for posting the pictures. I always like seeing other peoples ideas when it comes to decorating, as I too am fairly basic and need a little direction!

Hey Linda! I figure others may be interested in the answers to your questions so I'm bearing all, right here in the comment section!

"Do you have a huge closet, or where do you keep all the clothes, shoes, etc.? Also, where are the toys?"
Our closets are not huge. Katie Lyn and Carlie share the closet in the room. Kimmie's clothes and shoes are in the closet in the room next door, which is a guest room! There will be room for Candace's clothes and shoes in the guest room closet as well. I know that makes no sense to have your clothes in a different room, but you do what ya gotta do! I could put two girls in that guest room, but they all want to sleep together! And yes, we have a playroom in our basement with all the kids toys. Thank you Jesus it is a HUGE room, and really could be two rooms. It also holds the TV, games, crafts, etc. I am SO THANKFUL for this room!

"Also, how do you deal with privacy issues? Do your older girls ever get frustrated with everyone all together?"
Privacy? In this house? Are you kidding me? ;) Seriously, this is not an issue, yet. They love to be in the same room. We have that guest room if it ever becomes an issue with our oldest...she's 12 and one day I will not be surprised if she wants her own space! I always shared a room with my sisters and when they went to college I was DEVASTATED! And SO LONELY!

"Last of all, how do you make up top bunk beds to look good?"
Because of the newness of the beds, the older girls are fanatics about keeping their beds neat as a pin and the room spic and span. I am sure as time goes on, those top bunks will be big piles of silky bed clothes! My older boys have bunks and the top one NEVER gets made up...the sheets are changed on a regular basis, but as far as a quilt tucked in? Forget it! ;)

Great questions, Linda! I love you!

And Sherri, we don't know when we will travel. We DID get our TA by the way! Yay! But everything is closed in China this week for the holiday so we won't know travel dates until next week.

Thank you to you ALL for your sweet comments about the room! Praise the Lord! HE did it!

Great job on the room!! Seeing that first picture of Candace's bed all made up and waiting for her brought to mind the MONTHS of nights that I laid on Joshua's bed and prayed for him and wondered what it would be like to see him in it. Now I sneak in every night after he is asleep and say a pray of thanks for the sweet child that now lies there. I do so pray that very soon you will be doing the same thing for Candace. Come on CA & TA!!

What a great room!!!

I am going to borrow a couple ideas if you don't mind. I love the ribbons and bows and pictures. I also need to put a shelf up for my daughters upper bunk. That would be a great spot for her to put her latest book as well as favorite stuffed toys.
